Why Your Cooker Keeps Tripping the Circuit Breaker

The busbar is the thick copper bar that runs through the consumer unit, connecting mains power from the RCD to each individual circuit breaker. It’s the backbone of the distribution board — every circuit in the property depends on a solid, seated connection between its breaker and the busbar.

In this case, the circuit breaker for the cooker circuit had not been fully clipped onto the busbar. This meant the connection was incomplete — the breaker wasn’t receiving a clean, stable supply, which explained both the tripping on switch-on and the associated knock-on effects on the RCD.

Why This Fault Is Easier to Miss Than You’d Think

The circuit breakers in a consumer unit clip onto the busbar from the front, but it’s not always possible to confirm every breaker is fully seated by looking straight on. A breaker can appear flush and correctly positioned while still not making proper contact with the busbar behind it. This type of fault is more common than you might think.
