What Is a Ring Final Circuit?

A ring final circuit is one of the most widely used wiring configurations in UK domestic and commercial properties. Rather than running a single cable from the consumer unit to a series of socket outlets and stopping — which would be a radial circuit — a ring circuit uses a cable that leaves the consumer unit, serves socket outlets around the property, and then returns to the same consumer unit terminals it started from.

This creates a complete loop. Each socket on the ring is fed from two directions simultaneously, which is why ring circuits can serve a larger floor area and higher connected load than a comparably rated radial circuit.

What Happens When a Ring Circuit Breaks?

A ring circuit relies on that loop being complete. When the continuity of the ring is broken — whether through a poor connection, a damaged cable, incorrect remedial work, or wear over time — the single ring effectively becomes two separate radial circuits.

This might sound like a minor inconvenience, but it carries a real safety implication. The circuit breaker protecting the ring is rated for the load that a complete ring can carry — typically 32A. When the ring is broken and two radials are created, both are still protected by that same 32A breaker. Radial circuits require a lower overcurrent protective device rating than that, meaning the protection no longer meets the requirements of BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.

In plain terms: if a fault develops, the breaker may not trip when it should.

How Electricians Test Ring Circuit Integrity

During an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) or periodic inspection, electricians are required to verify that ring final circuits are electrically sound. This involves a series of continuity and resistance tests carried out at the consumer unit and at each socket outlet on the circuit.

Two measurements are particularly important: the resistance of the line conductor end-to-end (r1), and the resistance of the circuit protective conductor end-to-end (r2). These values, combined and halved, give the resistance at any point on the ring — a figure that feeds into calculations for fault loop impedance and earth fault protection.

The Figure-of-Eight Test Explained

The figure-of-eight test is a practical method for verifying that a ring circuit is genuinely continuous and not broken into two radials.

The test works by cross-connecting the conductors at the consumer unit before testing begins. Specifically, the line conductor from one end of the ring cable is linked to the circuit protective conductor (CPC) from the other end — and vice versa. This creates a figure-of-eight path through the ring.

With this cross-connection in place, a low-resistance ohmmeter is used to measure between line and CPC at each socket outlet in turn. On a healthy ring, the readings will be consistent and closely grouped across all sockets. Any significant deviation in the readings — particularly a notably higher reading at one or more points — indicates a break or high-resistance connection in the ring.

It is the only reliable method of confirming that what appears to be a ring circuit in the consumer unit is actually a ring circuit throughout the property — and that the protective conductor providing the earth path to every socket is continuous and sound.
